Role of Homeopathy in Keloids
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:36:36 PM »
Keloids are the excess growth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloidosis is a term used when many or repeated keloids occur.

Risk factors
More common in 10 to 20 yrs.
African Americans, Asians are equally affected
Keloids are also found in Hispanics
Keloid scars are seen 15 times more in highly pigmented ethnic groups rather than Caucasians.
Other names are Hypertrophic scar, Keloid scar, etc.

 Causes
Keloids run in families
Not fully understood
Skin conditions like acne simplex, acne rosacea
Skin bruises, scratches
Trauma, wounds
Unhealed burns, blisters, etc.
Childhood illnesses like chicken pox
Bad effects of surgical cuts, etc.
Vaccination effects
Exposure to sunlight may worsen the condition
This condition may be permanent
Homeopathy is effective as it treats the causative factors and hence removes keloids from its roots

Commonest Sites..
Keloids is most commonly found on following sites..
Deltoid region of the upper arm
Upper back
Chest & sternum
Back of the neck
Earlobes
Symptoms

A skin lesion points towards keloids if it is:
Flesh-coloured, red or pink
Located over the site of a wound or injury
Lumpy (nodular) or ridged
Lesion may itch while it is forming and growing
Skin and/or muscle tension seem to contribute to keloid formation and this is demonstrated by the most common sites of their formation
Commonest sites include the upper arm and back region.
Pathophysiology
The exact pathophysiology of Keloids include
Decreased percentages of mature collagen
Increased soluble collagen
Or that very small blood vessels get blocked and
The resulting lack of oxygen contribute to keloid formation
Diagnosis

A skin biopsy may be needed to rule out other skin growths (tumors). Diagnosis is based on the appearance of the skin or scar.

Outlook (Prognosis)
Keloids usually are not medically fatal, but they may affect the skin appearance.
In some cases, they may become smaller, flatter, and less noticeable over a period of several years.
Removing the keloid may not be permanent. Surgical removal may cause a larger keloid scar.
There is a high rate of recurrence - up to 50%. Some doctors say that all highly pigmented people should avoid tattoos and piercing to be on the safe side.

Treatment
Keloids usually are not medically fatal, but they may affect the appearance. In some cases, they may become smaller, flatter, and less noticeable over a period of several years.
Exposure to the sun during the first year after the keloid forms will cause the keloid to tan darker than the skin around it. This dark color may be permanent.
Removing the keloid may not be permanent. Surgical removal may cause a larger keloid scar.

Complications
Cosmetic changes that affect the appearance
Discomfort, tenderness of the keloid
Irritation from rubbing on clothing or other forms of friction
Limited mobility (if the keloids are extensive)
Psychological distress if the keloid is large or disfiguring
Return of the keloid

Role of Homeopathy
Homoeopathy is a scientific method of treatment that takes into account the entire person. It is based on the principle of similia similibus curanter or likes cure like. Homoeopathic medicines restore a healthy balance in the person and remove illnesses.

Homoeopathy has holistic approach towards patient which means treating patient as a complete person and not just diseased organ. In homeopathy, treatment is given by the process of individualization i.e. differentiating remedies from each other by some exclusive feature. It is based upon the concept that no two people are exactly alike.

In simple words, homeopathy doesn’t treat any diseases, instead of that, it boosts natural immunity of the body and cure takes place. Such type of immunity-stimulating treatment is called as constitutional approach. This is widely accepted method of treatment.

In constitutional approach, the doctor takes a detail interview of patient and asks about his mental, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects. He asks many questions regarding stress, struggle, failures, adjustments, and sorrow in his life also physical symptoms like desires, aversion, perspiration, discharge, stool, urine, sleep, dreams and reactions to temperature. Then, he selects the appropriate remedy to treat the patient.

Homeopathy has a holistic and constitutional approach in treating keloids and treats it effectively. Keloids are considered as small wounds healing with difficulty. On starting the homeopathic treatment, the Keloids start to shrink slowly in size and diameter. Finally they dry away and fall off from their site. Thus, homeopathy is effective in treating keloids very effectively. The earlier homeopathic treatment is taken for keloids, the better it is for the patient as he has maximum chances of relief.

One more advantage of homeopathic treatment in keloids is that it removes the ‘tendency of the body to recurrent keloid formation’. This is particularly useful in those patients having the tendency of keloid formation.

Homoeopathic medicines are completely safe, gentle and effective. They are side-effect free and are not habit-forming. They act very well on adults and children and are not contraindicated during pregnancy. It is to be taken after consulting homeopathic physician.
