It is a purplish, flat bruise that occurs when blood leaks out into subcutaneous tissues. It is the medical term for a subcutaneous purpura larger than 1 centimeter. It can be either in the skin or in a mucous membrane.

By definition, ecchymoses are 1 to 2 cm in size or larger, and are larger than petechia (1–2 mm) or pigmented purpura (>3 mm).

Ecchymosis commonly occurs from local blunt trauma, also termed as ‘contusion’. Due to this red blood cells are broken and the blue-red color is produced by the enzymatic conversion of hemoglobin into bilirubin, which is more blue-green.

The bilirubin is then converted into hemosiderin, a golden brown color, which accounts for the color changes of the bruise.

Ecchymosis may also occur as a symptom of bleeding disorders, leukemia, liver disease, and other health conditions.even minor contusions or bumps can cause extensive bruising or ecchymosis in an elderly person.

Blood vessels become more fragile as we age, and bruising may even occur without prior injury in the elderly
