Introduction
Impetigo is a bacterial infection of the uppermost layers of the skin. It is most commonly caused by streptococcal or staphylococcal bacteria. Impetigo generally occurs when these bacteria enter the top layers of the skin through an abrasion or lesion or any open wound and form an infection. While impetigo is most common in young children, primarily those living in unsanitary conditions, it is possible to develop impetigo as an adult.

Impetigo can develop anywhere on the body but the commonest parts are extremities. Symptoms of impetigo develop after 1 to 3 days of infection.

Homeopathy has good scope in treating impetigo in shortest possible duration. Homeopathic medicines can help to relieve annoying symptoms and sufferings of patients especially children. They act without any side effects.

CAUSES:
Caused by Streptococcal & staphylococcal bacteria
Any abrasion or lesions on the skin such as animal bites, insect bites, human bites, injury or trauma on skin etc.
Unsanitary living conditions
Viral respiratory infections
Types of impetigo
Bullous impetigo: Bullous impetigo is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This bacterium releases toxins that trigger the formation of large blisters. These blisters contain clear fluid which becomes cloudy later. These blisters are more likely to stay longer on the skin without bursting.

Non-bullous impetigo: The non-bullous or crusted form is most common form. It is usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus but can also be caused by Streptococcus pyogens. This form of impetigo begins with tiny blisters which eventually burst and leave small wet patches of red skin that may weep fluid. Later a tan or yellowish brown crust covers the affected area which looks like honey or brown sugar.
Clinical features
Pus filled blisters
Itching
Rash
Swelling and redness of affected part
Increase in temperature of specific part
Pain and soreness
If impetigo accompanies a deeper infection then it may lead to high fever (more than 101 degree F)
Difficulty in breathing or rapid breathing
Increase in size of nearby lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy)
Confusion or loss of consciousness for even a brief moment.
Investigations
Diagnosis depends upon appearance of lesions and area of distribution of impetigo.
A culture can be done of fluid to confirm the diagnosis.
Complications
Cellulitis
Guttate psoriasis ( Non-infectious skin infection which can be developed after bacterial infection)
Scarlet fever ( a rare bacterial infection that causes fine, pink rash across the body)
Septicemia ( bacterial infection of blood)
Post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis ( Infection of small blood vessels of kidneys)
Permanent skin damage or scarring
Prevention
Always use clean washed clothes and towels each time to avoid spread of infection.
Do not share towels, clothing, razors and other personal care products with other family members.
Wash your hands properly after touching or cleaning the affected parts.
Clean minor cuts, injuries or scrapes properly to avoid infections.
Maintain hygiene and sanitation.
Treat respiratory infections.
Cut your fingernails regularly to avoid abrasions on skin while scratching.
Homeopathic treatment of impetigo

Impetigo is a bacterial infection of outer most layer of skin. Homeopathic medicines stimulate defense mechanism of body to fight against infections and symptoms reduce without any complications or side-effects. This also helps to stop the progress of impetigo. Earlier treatment started, better results are expected.

Homeopathy works on individual as a whole not only on disease. Homoeopathic medicines are selected after careful study of symptoms i.e. their onset, duration, progress, cause, evolution and manifestation. On the basis of totality of presenting symptoms acute attacks of impetigo can be treated by homeopathic medicines.

But in recurrent cases a deep acting, constitutional remedy is needed. It is chosen after a complete and thorough study of the emotional and intellectual and behavioral aspects and also giving importance to other physical symptoms like perspiration, stool, urine, menstrual discharges and reactions to temperatures, sleep patterns and dreams. Homeopathy takes into account personal and family history including history of suppression of skin eruptions.

These medicines are completely safe in pregnancy and for elderly people & children. They do not cause any dependency and side-effects. They are easy to take and most palatable. Still patient should not do self-medication and take medicines after consulting a homoeopathic physician.

Thus homeopathy offers better solution in treating impetigo.
