Freckles are little brown spots on the skin that are caused by the sun.  Ephelides which are also known as freckles are flat, tanned circular spots. They are multiple in number and of the size of a pin-head.

They develop randomly on the skin, esp. After repeated exposure to sunlight. They are quite harmless and rarely develop into skin cancer.

These are particularly common in people of fair complexion esp. Those with red hairs. They appear on upper-body skin areas like the cheeks, nose, arms, chest and upper shoulders.

Causes
Genetics
Prolonged Sun exposure
Tanning
Freckles can be in different colors like reddish, light –dark brown, dark yellow, black, etc. They tend to become darker and prominent after exposure to sunlight. Later they get lighter in winter season.

They appear due to an increase in the amount of dark pigment called melanin produced by cells called melanocytes. They don't produce much melanin during the winter months, but produce more when exposed to the sun. Most often sun protection itself will reduce the occurrence and severity of freckles.

Homeopathy has good scope in treating freckles. Prolonged Homeopathic treatment lessens the tendency of freckle formation and flaring-up of freckles. Thus, homeopathy is effective in treating this condition.
As it affects complexion and appearance of person, it leads to psychological complaints too like low self-esteem, embarrassment, anxiety, etc.

Pathophysiology

Heredity, skin type and sun exposure are very important factors for the tendency to develop freckles. Freckles tend to be inherited genetically and are most common in individuals with fair skin and/or with blond or red hair.

All people receiving the same sun exposure may not develop freckles always and that too similar one. Natural sunlight and artificial sun tanning lights emit ultraviolet (uv) rays.

The melanin pigment in skin has protective properties against sun exposure. After exposure to ultraviolet rays, the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) thickens and the pigment-producing cells (the melanocytes) produce the melanin in increased quantity. The melanin is diffused into the surrounding skin cells, called keratinocytes. Thus the freckle is nothing but heavy deposit of melanin in a single spot and it’s uneven in distribution.

Prevention

It is mainly the sun avoidance and sun-protection, which can prevent freckles along with following measures:
Using sunscreens with spf (sun protection factor) 30 (minimum)
Wearing goggle, wide-brimmed hat and staying indoors or shady places.
Sun-protective clothing
Avoiding travelling in peak sun hours-10 a.m. To 4 p.m.
Treatment of freckles (ephelis)

Several methods are available to help lighten or reduce the appearance of freckles. Combination of bleaching, retinoids, cryosurgery, photofacials, laser treatment, etc. But not all freckles will respond to these measures. Preventive measures to avoid sun and UV protection are most important.

Role of homeopathy in treatment of freckles (ephelis)

Homeopathy has good scope in treatment for freckles (ephelis). Homeopathic medicines give relief from ephelis in shortest possible duration without any side effects. They can reduce the pigmentations and their occurrence.

As this condition leads to psychological complaints due to bad complexion, homeopathy offers helping hand to patient. Freckles can lead to low self esteem, anxiety, embarrassment, etc.  These medicines can give effects on both physical and mental (psychological) levels.

Homeopathic medicines can reduce tendency of freckles and reduce hereditary effects. They reduce severity of complaints and prevent complications. Most accurate and effective remedy is chosen by a homeopathic doctor according to individual signs and symptoms of patient along with disease symptoms.

Homeopathic medicines are selected on basis of symptom similarity as homeopathy is based on law of similars- “similia similibus curentur” which means “like cures like. Thus such well selected remedy will give best possible result in present case and relieve patient from distress.

Along with the homeopathic medicines sun protection in necessary to reduce the complaint and prevent further occurrence.

Homeopathic medicines ensure early and safe recovery of patient from freckles (ephelis). They are safe and effective in all age group patients. They are easy to administer and most palatable medicines. Still patients are advised to take homeopathic medicines after consulting homeopathic physician only.
Thus homeopathy is best possible treatment for freckles (ephelis).
