Freckles are flat, pigmented spots on the skin, usually found in sun-exposed areas of the body.It is due to an increase in the amount of dark pigment called melanin and are not due to an increase in the total number of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. See a doctor if the size, shape, or color of a spot changes, or becomes painful, because lighter skinned people are more likely to develop skin cancer.Certain types of laser treatment are available to treat the freckles.
