What is Preterm Labor..???
« on: August 15, 2012, 01:14:07 AM »
Preterm labor is labor that begins before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. It can happen to any pregnant women. Although the exact definitions may vary, preterm labor may include one, or more, of the following: uterine contractions, rupture of the amniotic sac (membranes), cervical dilatation (opening of the cervix).

What causes preterm labor?

Many factors can contribute to preterm labor.
* High blood pressure of pregnancy (preeclampsia ).
* Heart or Kidney disease(chronic medical illness) (such as heart or kidney disease).
* Infection (urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, infections of the fetal/placental tissues, group B streptococcus and STD).
* Drug abuse (such as cocaine, alcohol, tobacco and other drugs).
* Abnormal structure of the uterus.
* Cervical incompetence (inability of the cervix to stay closed during pregnancy).
* Previous preterm birth.
* Twins,Triplets or more(Multiple gestation).
* Rh/blood group incompatibility(erythroblastosis fetalis).
* Diabetes
* Being pregnant with a single fetus that is the result of in vitro fertilization (IVF)
* Under weight , Obesity
*Other problems associated with preterm labor include complications of the treatment. Medications used to treat preterm labor may have risks for the mother and fetus.

Each woman may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:
* Uterine Contractions(more than 4 in 1 hour)
* Menstrual-type cramps.
* Pelvic pressure.
* Backache.
*Intestinal upset.
* Vaginal discharge of blood, mucus or water.
If you notice any symptoms, call your physician as soon as possible.

Treatment for preterm labor may include:

* Bedrest (either at home or in the hospital).
* Tocolytic medications - injection to help slow or stop contractions.
* Corticosteroid medications - medications that may help mature the lungs of the fetus. Lung immaturity is a major problem of premature babies.
* Cervical cerclage - a procedure used to suture the cervical opening. Cerclage is used for women with an incompetent cervix.
* Antibiotics (to treat infection).
* Delivery - if treatments do not stop preterm labor or if the fetus or mother is in danger, delivery of the baby may occur. Cesarean delivery may be recommended in certain cases.

If you have symptoms of preterm labor call call / go to the hospital.The health provider may give instructions to
-have evaluation in the hospital
-rest on your left side for one hour and
-drink 2-3 glasses of water or juice.
If it is getting worse,call your health provider again or go to hospital.
