Heartburn is caused by an incomplete closure of the sphincter muscle at the end of thr esophagus causing stomach acids to wash up against esophageal lining resulting in pain and heartburn. This is known as Acid reflux/Esophageal reflux/Heartburn.
Some lifestyle changes involve
-sleeping with 2 pillows to keep stomach acid out at night,
-taking antacids after each meal,
-avoiding certain foods,
-and not eating before bedtime.
It requires long term therapy and appropriate tests. Constant  irritation can result in an increased risk of Esophageal cancer and Esophagitis.

Also it is important to remind that the patient to limit or avoid tomato juice, orange juice, mind, chocolate and excess caffeine and alcohol.
And the best time for taking an Antacid is 1 hour after eating.
